  • Dr Sriram Ganapathy has been selected for the 2021 Verisk AI Faculty Award.
2020
  • Dr Gurunath Gurrala has been selected for the SERB STAR award. STAR is a prestigious award instituted by SERB to recognize and reward outstanding performance of Principal Investigators of SERB projects. The recipients will get a fellowship of Rs. 15,000 per month and a research grant of Rs. 10 lakhs per year for 3 years.
  • Prof. Satish (Sl no.147673) and Prof. Narayanan (Sl no. 156038) in the top 2% of Scientists in their fields: World Ranking.
  • Prof. A G Ramakrishnan and his postdoc, Dr. Kanishka Sharma got both the best paper of the track and the overall best paper award of the IEEE Bangalore Humanitarian Technology Conference held during Oct. 8 – 10, 2020.
  • Associate Professor Vinod John has been promoted as Professor
  • Prof Soma Biswas has been selected for the Google India AI/ML Research Award
  • Prof. A G Ramakrishnan and Dr. Shiva Kumar H R develop a Kannada OCR that beats Google’s Tesseract OCR !
  • MTech students Siva A K, Puneet Kumar, Maj.Gaurav Mitra and MTech (research) student Mr. Sushmit Mazumdar have been selected for POSOCO Power System Awards (PPSA)-2020 under the Master category.
  • Prof. L Satish has been appointed as the Editor of IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery, since 11 Feb 2020.
  • Nisha Meenakshi won the best Doctoral Thesis Award from IndSCA, at WiSSAP 2020 organised at IIT Mandi.
2019
  • Prof A G Ramakrishnan has been elected as Fellow of Indian National Academy of Engg. He has also been invited to attend the Language Technologies for All conference (LT4All – 2019) at UNESCO Headquarters (Paris,France) during 5-6 December 2019.
  • Prof G Narayanan receives The Jaya Jayant Award for Teaching Excellence for Engineering for the year 2019.
  • Dr Kaushik Basu receives Prof. Priti Shankar Teaching Award for Assistant Professors for Engineering for the year 2019.
  • Dr Pavankumar Tallapragada’s paper titled “Differentially Private Distributed Convex Optimization via Functional Perturbation” which he has co-authored with  his collaborators Erfan Nozari and Jorge Cortes, was selected as the winner for the 2019 IEEE Transactions on Control of Network Systems Outstanding Paper Award. The award was presented at the 2019 Conference on Decision and Control (CDC) held in December at Nice, France.
  • Dr Gurunath Gurrala’s paper “Practical Approaches Towards Securing Edge Devices in Smart Grids” was adjudged best paper in the Smart Grid Session in ICPS 2019, held in MNIT Jaipur, 20-22 DEC 2019.
  • A paper authored by Prof Satish and his student, Bidhan Biswas, has been adjudged the best paper of the issue in IEEE Trans. Power Delivery.
  • Prof A G Ramakrishnan has been elected as a fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineers.(list of awardees 2019)
  • Dr. Neeraj Sharma (Post Doctoral Fellow), Shobana Ganesh (Junior Research Fellow)  and Dr. Sriram Ganapathy’s paper “Talker change detection: A comparison of human and machine performance,” has been chosen as the latest Technical Area Pick for the Journal of Acoustical Society of America (JASA)

  • MSc student Disha L Dinesha, receives POSOCO Power Systems award 2019 in Masters Category for her thesis titled “Application of Semi Analytical Methods for Large Power System Simulations”
  • Phd Student Apeksha Madhukar has been selected for NRDC National Budding Innovators Award – 2018, for her invention “A novel way of reducing gaseous pollutants by solid industry waste supported by electrical discharges: Removal of waste from waste”.
  • Dr Gurunath Gurrala has been awarded “IEEE PES Outstanding Engineer Award 2018” for contributions made to IEEE PES Bangalore Chapter Activities on 27th January, 2019.
2018
  • Chandra Sekhar Seelamantula and team won the Digital Health Prize at the recently concluded National Bio-Entrepreneurship Competition (NBEC) 2018. 
  • Dr Kunal Narayan Chaudhury’s PhD students Sanjay Ghosh and VS Unni have won the best paper award at GlobalSIP’18
  • Mr. Jerrin Thomas Panachakel and Ms. Ritika Jain, Ph D students from the MILE lab, Department of EE, have been selected to attend the Winter School on Quantitative Systems Biology: Learning and Artificial Intelligence, to be held at the ICTP, Trieste  from 12 – 23 November 2018.
  • Part of the Ph D work carried out by Mr. Ram Krishna Pandey, Ph D scholar working with Prof. A G Ramakrishnan,titled “Binary Document Image Quality Enhancement for Improving the Readability and OCR performance” has been approved by IPTel for patenting by the Institute.
  • Dr. Sriram Ganapathy has received the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) Young Scientist Research Award (YSRA) for 2018.
  • Prof. Chandra Sekhar Seelamantula has been appointed as an Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Image Processing (since March 1, 2018)
  • Prof. Udaya Kumar is now one of the Editors of IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery.
  • Dr. Soma Biswas is this year’s IEEE Shri Pralhad P Chhabria “Best Professional Women Engineer” Awardee.(March 2018)

  • A research paper by Alok Ranjan Verma and Subba Reddy B, presented at 4th IEEE Intl conf (UPCON 2017) held at Mathura, during 26th to 28th Oct 2017 has been adjudged as the best paper in the power systems track

  • Ankit Datta and Prof. G. Narayanan have received Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya Memorial Prize for their paper “Measurement of parasitic Inductances in the Bus-Bar Assembly of a High Power Voltage Source Converter” Published in the Journal of The Institution of Engineers (India): Series B, Volume 97, 2016.
  • Mr. A Madhavaraj, Ph D scholar under Prof. A G Ramakrishnan, has been invited to give a tutorial on Automated Speech Recognition in the 16th Tamil Internet Conference at the University of Toronto, Canada, during Aug. 25-27, 2017. He is provided travel and accommodation by the Conference.
  • Dr. Sriram Ganapathyi and Dr. Prasanta Ghosh have been selected to receive the Pratiksha Trust Young Investigator Award for the  next two years.
  • Prof. Udaya Kumar and Dr. Subba Reddy have been granted an Indian patent for their invention: AN INSULATOR COMPRISING FIELD REDUCTION ELECTRODES TO IMPROVE POLLUTION FLASHOVER STRENGTH

  • Avishek Chatterjee (PhD. 2016) has won the 2015-16 IUPRAI doctoral dissertation award for best thesis in the areas of computer vision, graphics, image processing and pattern recognition.
  • The following research students working under the supervision of Dr. Subba Reddy B, have received best paper presentation awards and cash prize: Mr Rahul Chakraborty received (2nd place), while Mr Shakthi Prasad D and Mr Alok Ranjan Verma received (3rd place) respectively, at the IEEE-IAS & Electrostatic Society of America, Joint conference held during 13th to 17th June 2016 at PURDUE university, Indiana, USA.
  • Dr. Gurunath’s paper titled “Flexible Implementation of Power System Topology Control in Smart Electricity Grids” has won the “2nd Best Poster Award” in IEEE PES T&D Conference and Exposition 2016 in Dallas, USA, May 2-5.

  • Mr. Abhijit K (Ph.D. student) paper title ‘A novel design method for SOGI-PLL for minimum settling time and low unit vector distortion’ was selected as the best paper for the session “Control Techniques for Power Converters 5” in the 39th Annual conference of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society (IECON 2013), during Nov. 10th – 13th 2013, in Vienna, Austria.

  • Science Academies Summer Research internship Programme for Students and Teachers – 2014
  • Mr. Saurav Pramanik (Ph.D. student) was conferred the “YOUNG RESEARCHER AWARD” for his paper, at the 18th International Symposium on High Voltage Engineering, ISH 2013, held during 25-30 Aug, in Seoul, Korea. He was the only Indian to receive this award. It carries a citation and a cash prize of USD 500/-
