Welcome!
Department of Electrical Engineering, Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, in collaboration with the IEEE Bangalore section and its several technical chapters, is organizing EE Summer School 2023 for undergraduate students ( B.Tech – EEE, EE, ECE,CSA 5th/ 6th/ 7th semester students), Post graduate students ( MTech – Power Systems, Power Electronics, Signal Processing, AI/ML and Control Systems, 3rd semester students ) from 3-7 July 2023. This weeklong summer school will be hosted in IISc, Bangalore. The objective is to encourage brilliant young minds to build careers in areas of Electrical Engineering including Signal Processing, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Power Electronics, Power Systems, Renewable Integration, High Voltage Engineering, and Control Systems. There will be talks and demonstrations by IISc faculty, research students, and industry professionals to introduce the attendees to the area of interest and let them know about the applications, current challenges, and emerging trends. This would also showcase their talent by participating in various activities like quizzes, hackathons, etc. We expect 100+ UG/PG students to join from top engineering colleges, including IITs and NITs from all over the country.
The last date for the application is 7th June 2023. The list of short-listed candidates will be announced within a week of the last date of the application.
The shortlisted candidates will be required to register (Rs. 1000 + GST for Non-IEEE, and for IEEE members Rs. 800 + GST, a separate link will be provided).
For SC/ST students’ there is no registration fee, but they still need to register. Please encourage your bright SC/ST students to apply.
Free Accommodation Support (On Campus/near by Hotel twin sharing) will be provided for SC/ST students.
For few selected Women Engineers free accommodation will be arranged on campus or in a nearby hotel (twin sharing).
For others self-paid accommodation (a maximum of INR 800 – 1000 per day) can be arranged if required in nearby hotels on twin sharing basis.
No travel support will be provided for anyone.

- Speaker Bio:Angarai Ganesan Ramakrishnan is a Professor of the Electrical Engineering Department at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India. He obtained his Ph. D. (Biomedical Engineering) and M Tech (Electrical Engineering) from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras and completed his undergraduate studies at PSG College of Technology. Currently, he heads the Medical Intelligence and Language Engineering Lab at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. He is a Fellow of Institution of Engineers (India) and the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers and a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, USA. He received the Manthan Award 2014 and Manthan Award 2015, for his projects 'Gift of New Abilities' and 'Madhura - The Gift of Voice' respectively. He is also one of the Founder Directors of RaGaVeRa indic Technologies Pvt Ltd, a deep tech startup incubated by IISc and a mentor of the startup, "Bhashini AI Services Pvt. Ltd."His primary research interests include Neuroscience of Pranayama and altered states of consciousness, Decoding of Imagined Words, Machine Learning with particular reference to Handwriting Recognition, Scene Text Recognition, Speech Recognition and Synthesis.
- Talk Title: Future of Flight: Hybrid Electric Propulsion.
- Speaker Bio: Sumitha Mohan is a Power Electronics professional with 15+ years of Research & Development expertise with GE. She is currently a Senior Engineer in power electronics at the GE Aerospace Research Centre. Her expertise is power electronics design and controls specifically for AC/DC conversion systems for multiple applications (transportation, renewables, industrial) including condition monitoring and health management for rotating machines. Over the past 4+ years, Sumitha has been working in the space of aviation power electronics, reliability, system modelling and control. Sumitha has 8+ filed patent applications till date. Her current interests are centred around technology enablers for aircraft electrification.

- Speaker Bio:Dr. Sarasij Das (Senior Member, IEEE) received the Ph.D. degree from the University of Western Ontario, London, ON, Canada in 2014. Previously, he was with the Global Technology Centre of Schneider Electric India Pvt. Ltd, Bangalore, India, and Power Research and Development Consultants Pvt. Ltd, Bangalore, India. He is currently working as an Associate Professor with the Electrical Engineering Department, the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India.
- Talk Title: Research Activity in High Voltage Engineering.
- Speaker Bio:Subba Reddy B. received the bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Karnataka University, Dharwad, India, in 1989, and the M.Sc. (Engg.) and Ph.D. degrees in high voltage engineering from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India, in 2003 and 2011, respectively. He is a Chief Research Scientist with the High Voltage Laboratory, Department of Electrical Engineering, Indian Institute of Science. His research interests include high voltage engineering, transmission line insulators, numerical techniques for high voltage applications, surge arresters, renewable energy systems, etc.,Dr. Reddy B has received several national and international awards for his work. He is a fellow of the Institution of Engineers, India, and a fellow of the Society of Power Engineers, India.
- Talk Title: Overview of Power Systems Research at FIST Laboratory, Electrical Engineering Department.
- Speaker Bio:Durvesh Kalke is a PhD student working in Electrical Engineering Department, IISc. He is currently working on power system dynamics and control and validating control algorithms on an experimental power system test-bed.
- Talk Title: Developmental Activities on 9 kJ Magnetic Pulse Forming Facility at the Pulsed Power Laboratory, IISc Bangalore.
- Speaker Bio:Deepak Kaushik (Graduate Student Member, IEEE) was born in Haryana, India, in 1996. He received the B.Tech. degree in electrical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Bhubaneswar, Bhubaneswar, India, in 2017. He is currently pursuing the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering with the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, India.
His current research interests include high power electromagnetics, electromagnetic manufacturing technology, and pulsed power engineering.

- Speaker Bio:Kuldeep Singh Shivran is a Ph.D. Student in Electrical Engineering Department at Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. He did his B.Tech. in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from NIT Meghalaya in 2016. His research interest is “Cyber Security in Power System Protection”.

- Speaker Bio:Dr. Tanumay Datta is currently working in Wireless R&D, Qualcomm Bangalore. He received his PhD degree from Electrical Communication Engineering department, Indian Institute of Science in 2014. Previously he has worked as a post-doctoral fellow in Centrale Supelec, France. His work experience and research interests include 5G technologies, massive MIMO, detection algorithms, and advanced modulation techniques.

- Speaker Bio:A G Vishal Anand (M’16, SM’20) received B.E degree from Bharathiar University, Coimbatore in 2001 and M.S degree from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore in 2005. From Dec 2005 to August 2006, he worked in American Power Conversion as a Design Engineer. From Sep 2006 to present day he has been with Bloom Energy (I) Pvt Ltd currently working as Director of Engineering. He is working towards his Ph. D at Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. His primary areas of interests are in the modelling, control and design of grid connected/ standalone Inverters, topology, analysis and control of resonant converters. He’s the current Chair of IEEE Industrial Electronics Society, Bangalore chapter and holds 4 US patents.

- Speaker Bio:Prof. Kaushik Basu is associate professor at the electrical engineering department, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. He obtained his PhD from the University of Minnesota, USA. His research areas are high frequency link DC AC converters- Topology, modulation (PWM, Resonant, DAB etc.) and control, Characterisation of and design with emerging power semiconductor devices such as SiC, GaB etcPWM techniques for multiphase and multilevel high power motor drive, Embedded systems design for power converters, High frequency and high power magnetics.
- Talk Title:Unified Multi-port Converter for EV Battery Charging Application.
- Speaker Bio:Himanshu Bhusan Sandhibigraha is a Direct Ph.D. student in Dept. of Electrical Engineering, joined in August 2020. He is working with Dr. Vishnu Mahadeva Iyer.He has completed B.Tech degree in Electrical Engineering from IIT (ISM) Dhanbad in 2020. His primary research work is on reconfigurable grid-connected converters. His research interests include soft-switching converters, modelling, control, and optimization of power converters.

- Speaker Bio:Harisyam received the B Tech. degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from the National Institute of Technology, Calicut, India, in 2018, the M Tech. degree from the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, India, in 2020, in electrical engineering, sponsored by Texas Instruments India. He is currently a Prime Minister’s Research Fellow at the Electrical Engineering Department, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India. - Speaker Bio:Utsab Kundu is Inspire faculty at electrical engineering department, Indian institute of science, Bangalore. He received the B.E. degree in electrical engineering from Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (formerly Bengal Engineering and Science University), Shibpur, Howrah, India, in 2010, and the M.E. degree in machine drives and power electronics from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur, Kharagpur, India, in 2012. He has a Ph.D. from IIT Kanpur, Kanpur, India. His research interests include resonant mode power conversion, power converter topologies, modelling, and control techniques.

- Speaker Bio: Lalit Manam did his BE in electronics and communications from NIT, Silchar. Presently, he is pursuing Phd at Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore under Dr. Venu Madhav Govindu.He is currently interested in 3D Vision problems primarily on large scale structure-from-motion and SLAM pipelines. His recent work has been on developing methods to estimate camera motions in structure-from-motion. Previously, he was involved in the development of impulse noise removal techniques from color images.

- Speaker Bio: Dr. Kiran Kumari is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, India. Before joining IISc, She was a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Control Engineering department of Technical University Ilmenau, Germany. She obtained the Ph.D. degree in Systems and Control Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, India in 2021. Dr. Kiran Kumari is interested in the broad area of control theory and its applications. Her current research includes event-triggered control, multi-agent system, control of quadrotors, sliding mode control, nonlinear systems and control, networked control systems.

- Speaker Bio: Dr. Sachin Srivastava has received his Ph.D in field of power system protection from Electrical Engineering Department, Indian Institute of Science. He has over 19 years of experience in the power sector. He is presently heading a community microgrid research area in Enphase energy as Power System Architect. His last job was as a Senior Principal Engineer in Power Grid Automation R&D at Hitachi Energy / ABB Powergrids in Bangalore, looking after the Protection applications development team. He has also worked as an Engineering Officer in power system division of Central Power research Institute, Govt. Of India prior to joining ABB. His major area of work is Grid Services in microgrid control, Distance protection, Fault location and traction protection applications. He is a main application developer of distance protection in ABB REL650 relays. He has 12 patents and 20 papers published in national and international conferences and journals. He is a senior member of IEEE, CIGRE and IET. He is a regular member, representing India in various working groups of CIGRE. Recently he has published a technical Brochure on "Challenges with series compensation application in power systems when over compensating lines", while working with WG C4.B5.41. Another WG B5.48: “Protection for developing network and different characteristics of generation” is ongoing for report preparation. He has carried out various assignment of consultancy and test studies to utilities in the field of Power system simulation, Power System Planning and Power System Protection. Some major areas are +/- 800kV NER-AGRA HVDC feasibility study for PGCIL, Transmission planning till 132kV network for NR, ER, and NER grids of India, Testing Series capacitor protection of Allhabad-mainpuri circuit and Designing a Load Shedding and restoring scheme for BALCO Korba.

- Speaker Bio:Dr. Himadri Bhushan Das is currently working as the Director-Model development in the Vehicle Software team, OLA Electric. He previously worked as the Senior Lead Engineer (Control system development) with Advanced Engineering Group of TVS Motor Company since 2003. He also worked with Reva Electric Car Company between 2001-2003. His areas of work includes various nonlinear mathematical system models for using 1st principle as well as system identification techniques. The control oriented models were mainly used for real time deployment, optimal control as well optimization purposes. He integrated different methods of optimal control solvers with control oriented models. Automotive control development for real time applications using classical, optimal, data driven approaches as well as system level numerical optimization. He holds 25+ patents and published 20+ international publications. He has completed PhD from the Electrical & Electronics Engineering Department of Imperial College, London in the area of Optimal Control development as a fully funded Commonwealth UK Scholar. Holds MS in Control system from the same institution & BE in Electrical Engineering from NIT Surat. - Speaker Bio:Nishanth Shetty received a Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) degree in 2020 with a specialisation in Electronics and Communication Engineering from PES University, Bangalore. He joined Spectrum Lab as a PhD student in August 2021 under the guidance of Prof. Chandra Sekhar Seelamantula. He is a recipient of the Prime Minister's Research Fellowship. Ramaiah Institute of Technology, Bangalore. During 2016–2017, he worked at Robert Bosch Centre for Cyber-Physical Systems (RBCCPS) as a Project Intern on the Smart Cities Project. Subsequently, he joined RBCCPS as a direct PhD student in 2017, working under the guidance of Prof. Chandra Sekhar Seelamantula, and has since been with the Spectrum Lab, Department of Electrical Engineering. - Speaker Bio:Dr. Soma Biswas is Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India. Her research interests are in Computer Vision, Pattern Recognition, Image Processing and related areas.She has PhD in electrical engineering from University of Maryland, college park, USA. Before joining IISc, Bangalore, she has worked as research assistant professor at university of Notre Dame, USA and as research scientist at GE John F. Welch Technology centre, Bangalore, India.
- Talk Title:Investigating our sleeping brains.
- Speaker Bio:Ritika Jain is a Ph.D. scholar working with Prof. A G Ramakrishnan in the Medical Intelligence and Language Engineering Lab, Department of Electrical Engineering, IISC Bangalore, India. Her thesis is on automated sleep stage classification and diagnosis of sleep disorders using multiple electrophysiological signals, including EEG, EOG, and EMG. MHer research interest lies in the area of neuroscience, brain-computer interface, machine learning, and signal processing. She has completed Masters of Technology in the Department of Electrical Engineering with specialization in signal processing from IIT Gandhinagar, Gujarat, India. She has worked on gaze-sensitive communication platform for the elderly and disabled. She did BE degree in Electronics and Telecommunication from BIT Durg, Chhattisgarh, India.
- Talk Title: Explainable AI: understanding highly accurate deep models.
- Speaker Bio: Debarpan is a PhD student (started January, 2023) at Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, India. He was a MTech (Research) student at IISc from 2020 to 2022. Before joining at IISc, He spent amazing four years at Jadavpur University, Kolkata, while pursuing his bachelor's in Electrical Engineering. At IISc, he is associated with LEAP lab under the guidance of the coolest Prof. Sriram Ganapathy. He has been working on explainable AI- specifically on post-hoc model-agnostic explainability methods, bias and fairness. He has also been associated with project COSWARA, one of the prominent responses of IISc to limit the spread of COVID-19. It shows that COVID-19 can be effectively screened using respiratory sounds like cough, breathing and speech. During his bachelor's, he has worked on multiple signal processing based projects with sensing and healthcare applications.

- Speaker Bio:Jayateja is currently a PhD student in Image Analysis and Computer Vision Lab, Department of Electrical Engineering, IISc. His research interests include Deep Learning and Data-Efficient Class Incremental Learning methods.

He then received the Postdoctoral Training from the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics, University of California at San Francisco. - Speaker Bio: Anusree is a Ph.D student working under the guidance of Dr. Pavankumar Tallapragada in the department of Electrical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Science Bengaluru. Her research interests include networked control systems, event - triggered control and resource – aware control in applications like cyber physical systems.
- Talk Title: Real-time Planning for Multi-Agent Coordination: RL Aided Application to Multi-Robot Intersection Management.
- Speaker Bio: Nishchal is a 4th year Ph.D student in RBCCPS under Dr. Pavankumar Tallapragada. His research interests include learning for control systems, networked control systems and RL techniques for combinatorial optimization.

- Speaker Bio: Prashil wankhed completed his BE in electrical and electronics engineering, from Sardar Patel college of engineering, Mumbai and presently, he is pursuing Phd, under the guidance of Dr. Pavankumar Tallapragada at control and network systems group, electrical engineering department, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.

- Speaker Bio: Dr. Prasant Misra is a Senior Scientist at Tata Consultancy Services - Research, where he works on intelligent cyber physical systems for smart mobility. He is a Visiting Faculty at the Robert Bosch Centre for CPS, IISc Bangalore. His current research is centered around the development of mathematical models, optimization methods, and decision support systems for large-scale operations management of electric vehicle fleets and charging infrastructure. Prasant is the Chair of IEEE Computer Society Bangalore Chapter and Vice-Chair (Industry Engagements) of IEEE Bangalore Section. He is a senior member of the IEEE and ACM. He is an ACM Distinguished Speaker.

- Speaker Bio: Dr. Ravichandra Kulkarni is an engineering professional with more than 11 years of experience, spanning over Academics, Industry and Collaborative International Research. After a small stint of research experience at IIT Madras, he moved to NZ and did his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Electrical Engineering from SECMS - Auckland University of Technology, Auckland, New Zealand. Whilst in NZ, he has worked as Program Leader (Level 6- Diploma in Electronics), R&D Engineer, Production Support Technician and also worked as event management crew member of Cricket World Cup 2016. He has published one Indian and one European patent in the domain of EV.

- Speaker Bio: Samir Hazra received Ph.D. degree from North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC, USA, in 2016. He graduated from Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, Kanpur, India with M.Tech. degree in electrical engineering in 2008 and from Jadavpur University, Kolkata, India with B.E. (hons.) degree in power engineering, in 2005. He has almost ten years of work experience from industry including EPC Power Corp., Poway, CA, USA, TVS Motors Company, Hosur, Tamilnadu, India and SIEMENS, Kolkata, India in various areas of power electronics and controls. His area of interests are in SiC device based high performance high-power converter design, Grid-tie inverter modeling and control, Industrial motor drives.

- Speaker Bio:Dr. Sriram Ganapathy is an Associate Professor at the Electrical Engineering Dept., Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. his research interests are in signal processing, machine learning, deep learning and neuroscience with applications to robust speech recognition, speech enhancement, speech coding and audio analytics including biometrics. Before joining as a faculty member at the Indian Institute of Science, he spent 4 years as a Research Staff Member at the IBM T.J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, NY,USA. he completed his Ph.D. with Prof. Hynek Hermansky, at Center for Language and Speech Processing, Dept. of ECE, Johns Hopkins University, USA.

- Speaker Bio:Dr. Pavankumar Tallapragada is an Assistant Professor (since 2017) in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru, India. Before joining IISc, he was a postdoc at UC San Diego. He obtained his PhD at the University of Maryland, College Park.His research interests include networked control systems, event-triggered control, distributed systems and control, multi-agent systems. Some of the applications he is interested in are cyber physical systems, networked transportation systems and dynamics of socio-technical systems.
