SUMMARY:Hands-On Training on Power Electronic Hardware Implementation and Testing
DESCRIPTION:Event: Hands-On Training on Power Electronic Hardware Implementation and Testing\n\nDate & Time: July 30\, 2026 – August 02\, 2026\nVenue: Department of Electrical Engineering\, IIScAbstract:The objective of this workshop is to provide participants with practical knowledge and hands-on\nexperience in the development of power electronic converters. The focus is on the complete\nhardware development workflow\, from component selection and simulation-assisted verification\nto PCB design\, construction\, testing\, troubleshooting\, and performance evaluation. Unlike\ntraditional power electronics courses that focus primarily on converter analysis and design theory\,\nthis workshop concentrates on the practical aspects of hardware realization. There will be very few\nlecture sessions and most of the time will be spent in hands-on simulation\, building and testing of\npower converter in the lab. The workshop is intended for students\, researchers\, and practicing\nengineers who wish to strengthen their experimental and hardware-oriented skills in power\nelectronics.\nCourse content\nModule 1: Power semiconductors\n• Introduction to semiconductor devices\n• Listing of semiconductor devices with necessary attributes.\n• Double pulse test simulation in LTSPICE.\n• Loss estimation and determination of switching frequency.\n• Gate driver selection and corresponding circuit design\n• Power circuit schematic design and BOM generation.\n• Power circuit PCB layout\n• Parasitic extraction from the PCB layout\n• Gate circuit optimisation through DPT simulation.\nModule 2: High-frequency magnetics and capacitors\n• Introduction to magnetic components (inductors\, transformers)\n• Selection of core material and geometry\n• Selection of winding types (planar\, foil\, Litz)\n• Insulation design and types of bobbins\n• Simulation in a FEA tool and estimation of losses\n• Hands-on winding of E-core and Toroid transformer\n• A practical guide to capacitor selection\nModule 3: Thermal management\n• Thermal design considerations for power electronic converters\n• Selection of heat sinks and cooling strategies\n• Air-cooled thermal analysis using finite-element simulation\n• Liquid-cooled thermal analysis using finite-element simulation\n• Thermal modelling of magnetic components\n• Practical approaches to thermal characterization and validation\nModule 4: Test and Measurement\n• Double pulse test.\n• Measurement and characterisation of passive components.\n• Efficiency measurement.\n• EMC measurement.\n• Thermal measurement.\n• Debugging and troubleshooting.\n\n\nOutcome: Gain comprehensive hands-on experience in the implementation\, fabrication\, testing\,\ncharacterization\, and validation of power electronic converter hardware.
